Three thrifty writers, one shared spreadsheet habit

BudgetSable is a small independent publication run by three frugal-living writers who test AI budgeting apps with their own money. Our mission is simple: help careful spenders find tools that save real money without shame, nagging or monthly fees that eat the savings they promise.

We started BudgetSable in early 2026 because most app reviews read like adverts. Every "best budgeting apps" list we found ranked whoever paid the highest referral fee, and nobody tested the free tiers that frugal households actually use. So we opened our own wallets, synced our own bank feeds and started keeping score — literally, in a colour-coded spreadsheet that Callum is not allowed to make any more complicated.

The team

How we test: the four-week wallet test

Every app we review goes through the same four-week wallet test. In week one we connect a real bank feed and judge onboarding: how long setup takes, whether bank sync works first time, and how hard the app pushes paid plans. Week two is automation week — we watch how accurately the app categorises at least 150 genuine transactions, from supermarket shops to a suspiciously frequent bakery habit.

Week three is coaching week. We read every notification, nudge and weekly report, and score the tone: does the app encourage like a thrifty friend, or scold like a disappointed headteacher? Week four is money week. We total what the app actually saved us — cancelled subscriptions, avoided fees, moved savings — and subtract what it cost. Only then do we award a Piggy Score out of five.

Our scoring criteria

How we make money (and how we don't)

BudgetSable has no investors, no sponsored placements and no paywall. Some links to apps we review may earn us a small referral fee if you sign up — at no cost to you — but apps cannot buy a ranking, a score or even a kind adjective. Our full policy lives on the privacy & editorial integrity page, and our current rankings are on the best AI budgeting apps list.

The short version

We test with our own money for four weeks minimum, we score on automation, gentleness, price, privacy and reporting, and no brand can buy a better review. If that sounds like your cup of tea, start with our fenmaro review — it earned the highest Piggy Score we've ever awarded.
